straight run: 50-50 male / female
sexed: >95% accuracy.

Sex-linked chicks have silver-gened mom and black- or red- gened dad. White is dominant, and red/black is recessive. So baby chicks will have dark/reddish color for girls, but white or light-yellow for boys.

Unlike human, mom decides the sex of chicks.

Last time I have a straight run - 11 roos and 10 hens. This year 12 roos and 8 hens.

Roos go to the pots of course. Roos are packing peanuts that are more or less free to keep the girls warm.

Do not feel too much jinsen to roosters. Otherwise its hormone level can go way up and it can become very aggressive :lol:

i lost all six hens last fall to a red-tail hawk.

starting anew this year with 34. 14 layers, 8 meat birds, and 12 roosters.

20 more coming for meat.

your best offense will be an electric wire, but it is costly. $400. I am contemplating.

after first year, chicken will molt each summer. each time, it loses 20% efficiency in feed to egg conversion ratio. i usually keep them for 2-3 years, and then it goes to pot.

RIR is pretty smart chicken. tough as well. however in terms of brown egg layers, nothing beats red star/black star, or sex-linked commercial layers.

if you want a dual purpose chicken (meat and egg), barred rock is a good choice. buff orpington makes a good mom though.

my chickens are my investment with highest dividend yield. a hen can lay 250-300 eggs a year.

I think you need certain percentage of agriculture income to qualify. I do not qualify.

You only saw the hens. There are 12 more roosters for fryers, and 5 white meat chicken (cornish rock), and 25 more coming in the mail.

花花，你杀鸡的姿势有问题。
杀鸡的时候如果不抓住鸡翅膀，它会乱扇翅膀，很难把握。
正确的姿势是把两只鸡爪绑住，用一只手同时揪住两个翅膀根部和鸡头，另一只手把鸡脖子上的毛拔掉，然后咔嚓一刀放血。放血的时候不要松开抓着鸡头和翅膀的手, 否则鸡头乱甩溅你一身血。把鸡脖子放低，另一只手抓住鸡腿抬高。放的差不多的时候要给鸡爪松绑，但是手还是必须抓住两只鸡爪上部不让其乱动。放血完毕之后把鸡头转过来塞到翅膀底下，这样鸡不会乱跑。这时倒一大锅几乎沸腾的水，把鸡丢进去翻动几下，注意不要烫到自己。然后就可以褪毛了。褪毛完毕后再开膛破肚。

事实上，我是不绑的。因为第二只手基本上一直抓着两只鸡爪。但是在拔毛，割喉的那几秒钟两只鸡爪是自由的。我怕第一次杀鸡的兄弟姐妹被鸡爪乱蹬给吓着了，才稳妥一点建议他们帮助鸡爪。

顺便说一句，国内市场上买的活鸡，基本上两只鸡爪都是绑住的，这样买回来半路上不会逃走。买回家直接就可以杀，所以国内自己杀鸡的话，一般不需要额外去绑鸡爪。自己杀鸡不能和小贩比，更不能和养鸡场比。

旋妹你也就看过小贩杀鸡而已，自己杀一只试试才能深切的体会手无缚鸡之力这句话。
事实上，左手抓住两只翅膀和头部，不是一件容易的事情，兔子急了会咬人，鸡被割喉了也会使劲挣扎，挣扎过程中，要抓紧了，万一松手，那就血溅庭院成了谋杀现场了。但是鸡的挣扎是一阵一阵的，不挣扎的时候手又不能抓的太紧，要适当松一松，否则血放不干净，鸡肉会发红。
